Tracking the trackers

How to see what practices websites use to collect information about us

Introduction:

The Internet is not as anonymous as many users think. Websites employ tracking tools to recognise and identify users and their behaviour, in particular for advertising purposes. These tracking tools may infringe the users' privacy in unprecedented ways.

Usually users are not aware of being tracked on the Internet. They often don't know what website providers may find out about them, what they deduce from the users' behaviour and what consequences may occur. To foster the option for an individual decision on being tracked or not in different areas of the Internet, more transparency on tracking methods and possible ways to deal with them is necessary.

Scope of the workshop:

This workshop will discuss tracking technologies from multiple angles. Arnold P.C. Roosendaal from UVT will give a talk about the legal implications. He will explain which rights tracking services may infringe and how users can defend their privacy rights from a legal perspective.

Subsequently Rigo Wenning from W3C will demonstrate the tool "Privacy Dashboard" that enables users to evaluate whether websites collect information about their visitors.

Finally, Rigo Wenning and Ulrich König from ULD will guide the participants to use the "Privacy Dashboard" themselves. The Q&A session will also offer the opportunity to find out more about advantages and caveats of 'do-not-track' technology and other opt-out systems, including the legal implications of tracking. We will talk about the rights that are potentially violated by tracking users on the Internet and what users can do about it.

Joint PrimeLife & ABC4Trust Credential Tutorial announced

Trustworthy, yet privacy-preserving authentication is necessary to enable long-term and lifelong privacy for users. Attribute-based credentials offer a solution allowing strong authentication while the user may remain anonymous towards the relying party and without the identity provider learning to know about the websites visited or services deployed by a user. The technology to deploy attribute-based credentials is available with IBM’s Identity Mixer and Microsoft’s U-Prove. The EC-funded project ABC4Trust now takes up the heritage of the PRIME and PrimeLife projects and will deploy systems using attribute-based credentials in actual production pilots and deliver open reference implementations.

PrimeLife and ABC4Trust organize a joint tutorial explaining the basics of the technology, its potential spheres of application for privacy-enhancing technologies and some building blocks of the underlying cryptography. The tutorial will be held in Rüschlikon (near Zurich) on Friday June 10, 2011 and hosted by IBM Research Zurich.

Tutorials will be given by expert researchers from Microsoft and IBM, presenting a common view on Privacy-ABC technologies that encompasses both the U-Prove and Identity Mixer technologies.

Current and emerging challenges of eHealth - privacy, law, ethics, governance and beyond

A key challenge is the protection of health data throughout a person's lifetime - whether those data are personal or more generic. Indeed, it may be necessary to extend this protection beyond a lifetime, as disclosure of the data could adversely affect the individual's family members, descendants, and social or racial groupings. How feasible is it to control uses of these data as systems, organisations and data processing change? What other societal and socio-economic difficulties may arise that mean that the handling of personal, private or confidential health and medical data will alter? Could certain rules or restrictions about the handling of private data actually impede beneficial societal or socio-economic developments?

Federated Social Web Conference to be held on June 3-5, 2011 in Berlin

Social networking has transformed the Web. However, most Social Web applications today limit relationships to those with accounts in the same system. People want a seamless integration without barriers between service providers and applications used as is known from other forms of communication form such as telephone or e-mail. To explore the interoperability needed, the PrimeLife project supports the efforts of the Word Wide Web consortium (W3C) in organizing the Federated Social Web Europe Conference to take place June 3-5, 2011 in Berlin. The conference is hosted by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung. It follows the 2010 Federated Social Web Summit and is designed to bring together diverse communities interested in Social Web, identity, and privacy. The agenda will include talks, presentation of position papers, and opportunities for on-the-ground agenda building.
